A veteran is any former member of the Armed Forces of the United States who has served on active duty and was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. There are around 20 million U.S. veterans today which makes up just under 10 percent of the population. The average age of all veterans is 58 years with 21 percent of the veteran population under 45, 41 percent between the ages of 45 and 64, and 37 percent of the population 65 years or older. As the veteran population is aging, it is important to make sure that their basic needs are met in addition to any mental health services veterans of all ages may require as a result of their time in the service.
What is it?
Support for veterans can look like ensuring that veterans have access to a variety of services that help with employment, mental health, home-ownership, and keep up with an individual’s medical needs. The Semper Fi Fund and the Fisher House Foundation are two amazing charities that support veterans. An alternative to directly donating to credible charities is to purchase products from companies that donate a portion of their projects to organizations that also support veterans. Our positive impact partners, Jelt, supports veterans and their families by donating a portion of the profits to Warriors and Quiet Waters. This organization heals veterans and their families through fly-fishing.
Why does it matter?
Veterans are a prominent vulnerable population with an increased risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) along with other mental illnesses. As veterans are more likely to suffer from a mental illness, they are also at an increased risk of experiencing homelessness at some point in their lives. Current social programs can fall short of getting everyone the attention they need which means consumers can lend a hand by purchasing products from businesses that support veterans or by directly donating to charities who focus on this cause. This socially responsible approach to creating profit can help these amazing organizations mobilize in a way they may not have been able to before and create a greater positive impact on the veteran community.
Your switch to products that support veterans is important because their support can help fill in the gaps social programs are not able to fill.
