Blog/Impacts - Environmental Initiatives
Environmental initiatives provide a blueprint for organizations and companies to more consciously create positive change for the environment. They often dictate where a portion of a company’s profits is donated or directed to in order to solve pressing environmental, and possibly social, issues.
What is it?
Environmental initiatives are essentially new sets of actions that aim to protect the natural world. At the core of the initiative, there is a desire for environmental conservation, but it does not stop there. These initiatives can also capture steps that benefit the social world as well. Our impact partner, Jelt, has created an initiative that has informed how their belts are made and where the profits go. Jelt’s elastic belts are made from recycled plastic bottles and they donate to organizations that support veterans, youth, and the environment with every purchase. Warriors and Quiet Waters is an organization that uses fly-fishing to heal veterans and their families. Thrive supports parents, empowers children, and strengthens families. Jelt also donates to 1% for the Planet which connects monetary support to incredible non-profit organizations that address pressing environmental challenges.
Why does it matter?
Environmental initiatives can set the tone for other companies. Our expansive economy breaks the ecological ceiling when it goes unchecked. This has contributed to the issues the world has been facing with the rise of climate change. Pesticide resistance, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, increased extreme weather, and so many other issues have resulted, in part, because of the way the economy is currently shaped. This financial system has the ability to exponentially expand despite the very finite world we all live in. Environmental initiatives are a great way to reconcile the ideological and physical worlds.
A successful environmental initiative will contribute to a more circular economy rather than an ever-expanding one which will benefit the natural environment. An excellent environmental initiative will also have steps in place that contributes to the resolution of a variety of social problems as well.
