Single-use plastic comprises 50% of the over 300 million tons of plastic the U.S. produces every year, and over 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean on an annual basis. Our positive impact partners, World For Good, Anato, Dot Cup, Who Gives A Crap, are all plastic free to combat this issue!
What is it?
Plastic free means that a company or individual does not implement or use plastics that are designed to be used one time before being thrown out. Plastic free products generally substitute the product packaging to one that can be easily recycled and/or reused. For example, plastic straws that can be commonly found at restaurants can switch to offering paper straws. Our partner Anato is making waves with their plastic-free beauty and skincare products. An estimated 9 percent of cosmetics packaging has been recycled out of the 8.3 billion metric tons that have been made. For reference, the standard recycling rate of normal items is between 25 and 30 percent depending on where you live. Similarly, Dot Cup is drastically cutting down on the plastic involved in the menstrual hygiene industry. The dot cup is a menstrual cup that comes with a reusable storage pouch which helps extend the life of the cup and keep it clean when it is not being used. The average woman disposes of roughy 150 kgs (330.69 lbs) of tampons, pads, and applicators in her lifetime. 90 percent of this waste is plastic. If the average menstrual cup lasts between 5 and 10 years, imagine how much plastic is diverted from landfills and the ocean, not to mention the amount of money menstruating humans can save from this switch.
Why does it matter?
This plastic endangers wildlife who are already facing extinction and takes the lion’s share of limited landfill space. Additionally, most single-use plastic is oil based which means that it relies on a finite resource that is becoming less and less relevant moving into the future. When consumers purchase plastic-free products, they are incentivizing other companies to change to a more environmentally friendly model. Companies are also able to set their products at a premium price because consumers are willing to pay more for higher quality materials and the chance to make a brighter future.
Your “Simple Switch” to products that support plastic free businesses is important because your purchase supports a more closed-circle business model and keeps even more plastic from accumulating in places it has no business being.
