Simple Switch is founded on the idea that consumers should have easy access to environmentally and socially responsible “every day” products. We have partnered with a plethora of companies and organizations who give credence to and play an active role in social empowerment.
What is it?
Social empowerment refers to the process of developing a sense of autonomy and self-confidence while acting on both an individual and collective level to change social relationships and the institutions and discourses that exclude oppressed communities. Companies and organizations can contribute to social empowerment by donating a portion of their profits to organizations that are able to benefit vulnerable communities or by employing these communities.
SutiSana fights human trafficking and commercial exploitation by providing dignified employment for women leaving prostitution in Bolivia. Upavim Crafts is a self-run cooperative of women who work to push back against the violence and poverty in their neighborhoods. Women’s Bean Project is a program that teaches women daily living skills, social skills, and provides career guidance and preparation. Chic Made Consciously offers fair work opportunities to individuals who may have limited opportunities to make a living. Catalyst Collections empowers women-led businesses and creates opportunities for vulnerable women by offering training and supporting Haitian and Iraqi women entrepreneurs and artisans to advance their businesses. World For Good sells tote bags that help support people that are at risk or are survivors of sex trafficking, sex slavery, and poverty. Azizi Life is a not-for-profit organization that partners with over 30 independent groups around Rwanda where all of the profits go to the artisans. Dot Cup gives a menstrual cup and pouch to a woman in need with every single purchase of a menstrual cup. Who Gives A Crap donates profits to the construction of toilets, so everyone can have access to improved sanitation.
Why does it matter?
Social empowerment essentially aims to for everyone to be able to meet their immediate needs while also having the ability to invest in their future. It is about allowing everyone to have control over their lives which is possibly one of the most human things we could ever do. Humans are able to manipulate the surrounding environment in almost any way we please. Buildings did not just fall out of the sky to create cities. But because of the way that our society is structured, not everyone is able to live as freely as their neighbor. Social empowerment through employment or through reputable organizations who know what they are doing can make a world of a difference in the lives of the oppressed, the ones with scarce opportunities, the ones who can have an amazing impact on the world but do not know how or are not able to given the resources that are available to them.
Investing in social empowerment benefits the whole for a more equitable future.
